Late 2013, I got a call from Miss Tolani Arole

Late 2013, I got a call from Miss Tolani Arole requesting to host a party for children of DUSTBIN ESTATE. I didn't know what to expect, but I was blown away by the customized T-shirt each child got among other things. Those shirts are still in use in the wardrobe of most of the children.

Now in 2014, Tolani is out again to cater in celebration for over 100kids from ages 5-15years. She has pulled friends in to celebrate our future. what fascinates me about Tolani is that she is a TEACHER and she isn't even 30years old yet. She should have used her hard earned resources to care for herself instead she GIVES! I wept in joy and relief that we still have souls in the educational sector in Nigeria whom genuinely care about children.

14th of December,2014 is the date. We cannot wait! While I wait at home to get the clothing for the year delivered to me, our kids @dustbinestate are anxious to see what Aunty Tolani has done again.

God bless Tolani Arole, a teacher at LAGOS PREPARATORY SCHOOL, IKOYI.

LOTS Charity Foundation

Hello Sir\Ma,

In the last one year, LOTS charity foundation has done four water projects. Paid for my Sahara energy group, SMP class 48, and group of individuals' contribution.

In the last six months, LOTS charity foundation has had two of her benefactors admitted in tertiary institution to study the courses of their choice. Balogun Rufai had 264 point in his JAMB which attracted Harvesters International Christian Centre [HICC] to give him full scholarship through out university. His name came out 4th on the merit list in Federal University of technology Akure to study meteorology. While Aare Solomon got admission to study computer Engineering at Ogun State Institute of Technology Igbesa.

In the last nine months, LOTS sanitary facility has been serving 20-50 occupants of DUSTBIN ESTATE daily. From the stipend charged [20naira per use] for the facility, LOTS charity foundation has been able to get part of her petty cash from the revenue LOTS sanitary facility makes. We have generated on average 15,000-25,000 naira monthly. Not counting the number of women whom are grateful for having access to portable water via the free water besides the LOTS sanitary facility that was built on behalf of LOTS charity foundation by Sahara group for the people of dustbin estate.

January of 2013, more than 100families living at DUSTBIN ESTATE did not feel the full weight of the 2weeks compulsory strike that the subsidy era imposed on all Nigerians because they had food at home thanks to all partners whom donated towarsds 'Christmas for every family at DUSTBIN ESTATE' food drive where each family got

1] one 50kg bag of rice

2] half bag of garri

3] one live chicken

4] one liter of vegetable oil

5] 12 plastic bottles of soft drinks

6] seasoning; curry, maggi, thyme, salt, pepper e.t.c

7] Tim tomatoes.

Most people at DUSTBIN ESTATE earn a living on a daily basis, that food drive helped save the lives of over 500 people. Each family at DUSTBIN ESTATE has an average of 6 members.

For all these contribution donors and contributors has helped LOTS charity foundation accomplish in 3years, we will like to thank you all for consistently improving not just in words but action the plight of the less privileged in the society.

It is in this vein, LOTS charity foundation seek for your support for our 4th edition of the 'Christmas for every family at DUSTBIN ESTATE' food drive 2014. Please find attached documents for that request followed closely by a concept paper for our annual 'Hamper for every Child' too.

We hope to get a favorable response shortly.

God bless you and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

December of 2012

In December of 2012, I met a young lady whom happened to be my name sake; Mrs Tolulope Bode-Olanipekun [She works at WAMCO Nigeria; if you know her please hug her for us]. That was the first and last time I saw of her. But I have felt her hand in giving towards LOTS charity foundation's work @dustbinestate. Since our meeting, Tolu has given 1.2million naira worth of food items, supplying 50,000 naira worth of food items on a monthly basis.

So I wasn't shocked when I heard she was promoted at work. He/she who waters must himself/herself be watered. Its that simple and its a principle that is beyond religion, tribe, race or creed.

I, Tolulope Sangosanya, the Mayor of DUSTBIN ESTATE is looking for more people like Tolu Martins. Together we can change the face of this great country Nigeria one community per time.

Do you know people like Tolu Martins? Please direct them to like our page and become our partner in nation building @dustbinestate.

Signed,
Mayor DUSTBIN ESTATE.

Thanks to Mrs Kunbi Wuraola

Mrs Kunbi Wuraola has taken the bill for the soft drinks for 150 families @dustbinestate for 'Christmas for every family'. Donation worth 180,000naira. I am in awe of her. she's being my best supporter personally and in social space. God bless you Ma.

A friend's friend who remains anonymous

I have a friend's friend who remains anonymous whom donated 25bags of rice in 2012 and promised 40 bags in 2013 but on delivery, 55bags of rice was delivered. I was in shock!

At first I thought it was a mistake then I called and she said she deliberately understated just for this element of surprise and oh yes I was. my surprise came from the fact that the donor is a young lady like me.

she did what most with more liquidity of cash could but wouldn't do. God bless her. she has committed again, how many bags of rice? I don't know but I know I wouldn't be disappointed because we serve a God that gives seeds to the sower!!!

And there are more people like her in Nigeria and beyond. I need them too, please link us to people like our Miss Anonymous. donate to

Founder

Miss Sangosanya Tolulope was born on the 18th of December, 1982, to the first born of Mrs. T.B Akinola and Mr. B.A Sangosanya, both of whom are indigenes of Ijebu-ode, Ogun state, Nigeria.
She obtained primary school certificate in Bodija international school[BIS] Ibadan after changing schools six [6] times from moving from
family to family due to the unique nature of her family.
She attended Lagos State model college, Igbonla, Epe for her
secondary school. She proceededto Olabisi Onabanjo University,
Ogun State formerly known as Ogun State University [OSU],
where she obtained a degree in Mass Communication.
It was while in school that Miss Tolulope started
LOTS charity foundation then known as project LOTS. After graduation, Miss Tolulope unlike her contemporaries decided not to seek for employment anywhere else than from her own vision.
Since 2006, she had single handedly, through grace of God moved the dream and vision from being a dream into a reality. While her peers entered into employment to enrich themselves, Miss Tolulope understood what success meant to her, she realized what it meant to live and not just exist. Her definition of success is not the amount of money possessed in her bank account but the amount of lives she influences positively. To her success is not measured by tangible things, but the intangible such as love, alms giving, positive change, care, giving attention to others and more. Life to her isn’t in receiving but in giving. Life holds no truth in her view except one that helps others achieve what they thought was impossible.

Our Services

1] LOTS literacy supplementary classes:
This was set up when we realized that most of the kids from age 4- 17 in school kids could not read and write effectively on their own. LOTS set up this class with just one teacher who started literacy from the beginning of A, B, C….. not dividing the class according to ages because all the kids had the same challenge. As the class grew in attendance, two more teachers were employed and the class was split into three classes. The kids that could read with little or no assistance were in one class, those that could pronounce and write between two letter words to four letter words were in another while those that cannot read at all are in the last class.
After interacting with the kids from dustbin estate that attend the literacy classes for over a year now, we have noticed that kids that attend private owned school do better academically compared with those in government owned school, thus we want to try out changing schools for kids from public schools to private in order to improve them academically. We reasoned that since the kids spend eight hours in school and maximum of two hours in our literacy classes, it will be better for them to be exposed to effective and efficient education rendered more in private owned school compared to those in public schools. Our first benefactor of our school change scholarship will be resuming at her new school come September, 2010.

Financial Support

You can help financially through the following means:

A] Adopt a family for relocation- You can pay for a family’s house rent which ranges from 108,000naira – 200,000naira for two years rent plus agency and legal agreement fees. This will help the children grow in more sanitary clean environment thus reducing their exposure to health hazards.
B] Adopt a child for qualitative education- With as little as 25,000naira, one can ensure that a child from dustbin estate gets at least a qualitative education compared to what is offered in the public schools. The child’s school may have to be changed from public school to private owned school depending on the child’s academic performance.
C] Support the literacy class and after school supplementary classes- You can help by donating cash which will be used in running the after school lessons for those already in school, literacy classes for those who are not yet in school or those who are not yet getting qualitative education due to the school they attend. This is a supplementary class; aimed at providing additional knowledge to support what is being taught at the four walls of buildings referred to as schools, which is considered inadequate.

OUR STORY

In 2005, Tolulope sangosanya started an after school club for kids in a slum area built on trash in rural Lagos. This slum was later named "DUSTBIN ESTATE" by the kids of the community; it is located in the Ajegunle area in Lagos state. The idea to start the after school club stemmed from a national fact in Nigeria; many children in public primary and secondary schools can neither read nor write. Everyone knows of the makoko slum but very little is known about the DUSTBIN ESTATE slum where hundreds of thousands of children inhabitable conditions and are susceptible to high Malaria and Diarrhea rates and other health challenges. These challenges are direct implications of health and welfare challenges; a problem which is a national issue in Nigeria.
These problems are even more common in rural areas, particularly in the slum areas. The after-school club was meant to be about literacy improvement for poor children, however, other factors which affect literacy became apparent and as such shaped the framework of our programs and projects. Tolu, along with others began the difficult process to rebuild this slum with many of its projects and boast access to education for poor children of DUSTBIN ESTATE.
These process uncovered the challenges of lack of nutrition, health challenges, access to sanitation and clean water. We discovered that, in a majority of these cases, a child had contracted one of the many illnesses caused by lack of food, access to clean water and sanitation had a direct impact on school attendance. Through further research we have begun to understand that unsafe water effects more than just education. Health concerns place a disproportionate amount of pressure on a government whose resources are already limited when dealing with such problems. If development is about people, and it is, then Nigeria can no longer afford to overlook the welfare of our society's poorest and most vulnerable children, as it will have a huge impact on our future as a nation.

OUR PROJECTS

CHRISTMAS FOR EVERY FAMILY; is an annual food-drive project where families are given the basic food items to celebrate in the festive season. A lot of the families in "Dustbin estate" survive on daily income generating activities, Christmas season is generally a low season economically in the area. As such, it is important for us that the families of these children get to celebrate this season and can feed.
CHRISTMAS HAMPER FOR EVERY CHILD: The hamper includes Christmas gift for every child and basic school supply, multivitamins and basic toiletries for the next academic session. Currently we are only able to do so annually during the holiday season, our intention is for the hamper to be a quarterly to ensure that children have the basics, ensuring good health.
LITERACY IS A RIGHT NOT A PRIVILEGE; this was our pioneer project, the after-school-club relies on volunteer teachers, and it uses food as incentives to ensure the children come and the parents interfere because they get fed. One of the challenges we discovered working with these children over the years was, 98% of children in rural communities cannot read nor write, including those enrolled in formal education. Our main goal for is using food to boast literacy, ensuring that children in this community can read and write.
CHILD WELFARE; In Nigeria, primary education is free, according to UNICEF at the inception of free primary education, the rates of children attending primary education sky-rocketed, after a couple of years began to declined.Children were hawking on the streets, involved in child-labor as opposed to attending free primary education. What this means is that survival to the poor was more significant than education. Ideally, it should not be one or the other, for every child has a right to proper nutrition, medication, vitamins, vaccination, sanitation, clean water as children need all of these to enable them can enjoy benefits of free education. The literacy project highlighted the trade-offs between basis needs and access to education. This project relies on cash and in-kind-donation to ensure that children in the community have at least three balanced diet weekly.
CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION: This community lacks clean water, sanitation and toilets, as a result children are exposed to health challenges which affects their wellbeing. With the help of sponsors, this project has so far provided five toilets and four water-pumps for the community. For better coverage of the community, our goal is expanded the water pumps and build more toilets to accommodate the community and reduce health risk associated with the current realities. We need 20 more water pumps, toilets and bathrooms to accommodate the population in the community.
